Inspirational Quote

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

At Digitalvaliance, we’re all for inspirational quotes and stories. We figure if we can help inspire one more individual or family to get out there and start their own business, then we will strive to help you to do so!

I was drinking my regular cop of mocha (white mocha, grande from Starbucks with whipped cream) and I noticed they had a “The Way I See It” Section on the cup that featured a quote by Keith Olbermann. I liked itand figured many people today, due to the recession need all the inspiration they can get and figured I may as well share it so here goes:

“The world bursts at the seams with people ready to tell you you’re not good enough. on occassion, some may be correct. But do not do their work for them. Seek any job; ask anyone out; pursue any goal. Don’t take it personally when they say “no” - they may not be smart enough to say “yes.” - Keith Olbermann

Why he didn’t owe GoDaddy $6,579!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

This is a pretty interesting article written by a customer that was charged $6,579 by GoDaddy because of a bug in the popular CMS, Drupal that caused for his account’s bandwidth to increase exponentially. He ended writing a letter to the Huffington Post for GoDaddy to remove this charge.

Go Daddy’s reputation has been under attack for quite some time. Even though I am sure this is an isolated incident, it seems as though many of Go Daddy’s business practices are very questionnable, but most would argue that the practices of the most powerful companies in the world tend to be.

GoDaddy has been known to take down websites it deems inappropriate without notifying the owners of the accounts and also for stealing domain names from its customers using shady practices.

GoDaddy’s prices are extremeley competitive and so its going to be extremeley difficult for consumers to be swayed by a few horror stories.

At Digitalvaliance, we have used GoDaddy’s domain name registration services without incidence. We would like to know of any horror stories you may have had with GoDaddy? If we have enough responses, we will no longer endorse them as one of our official domain name registrars.

Dropbox

Monday, September 29th, 2008

This posting is one that we are Digitalvaliance are very excited to make. There aren’t many applications out there that make us very excited upon their release.

Drop box is a service that allows you to access your folder from any computer that is setup to do so. It keeps all the files synchronized in real time. You can think of it as CVS/SVN on steroids but with a much easier to use interface.

Dropbox sets up a regular folder that automatically synchorizes across all computers that have your drop box. Furthermore, dropbox makes your folder accessible via a web interface.

You can think of it as your thumbdrive that is always available. There have been countless times where I was pursuing a creative project but forgot an important image or asset on my main desktop PC at work. By storing all of my files in my dropbox folder, I am able to access it wherever I have an internet connection. Another great feature of the product is its speed. Because Dropbox only stores the difference (or delta) between file changes, it doesn’t need to store the entire version of the file. This makes the service operate much faster and for the team to make their service much more scalable.

If it were up to us, we’d nominate Dropbox as one of the most innovative products of the year, if not decade. File storage is not a new thing, but the manner in which Dropbox is able to make everything so seamless, is simply genius. Furthemore, they have a PC, Mac and Linux interface!!

Congratulations to the Dropbox Team on such a great product! Go sign up today and let us know what you think of their product!!

Tethering your iPhone (Ultimate)

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Apparently, these guys are touting their method of tethering your iPhone the ONLY reason you should even consider Jail Breaking your iPhone (since Jailbreaking comes with the risk of your iPhone getting bricked by Apple).

Parlez Vous: Tether

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Ok Ok. Tethering isn’t exactly a web design term but we figure we might as well arm your vocabulary with as much web jargon as possible!

Wikipedia defines tethering as:

Tethering* - The connection of a non-mobile device (e.g. desktop computer), to a mobile device (e.g. cell phone, PDA) for the purpose of wireless internet access by the non-mobile “tethered” device.

In real dialogue

Joe: Man I tethered my blackjack with my laptop and now I’m surfing the portfolio at www.digitalvaliance.com. Those guys sure are creative.

Brain Controlled Mobile Applications

Friday, September 26th, 2008

NeuroSky Inc, a venture company based in San Jose, Calif, prototyped a system that reads brain waves with a sensor and uses them for mobile phone applications.

We thought the coolest aspect was the fact that they were able to develop apps that did the following:

(1) show the degree of brain’s relaxation on the screen of a mobile phone by using a visualizer
(2)  show the degree of brain’s tension in chronological order after a user solves about 10 arithmetical problems (addition, multiplication, etc) shown on the screen of a mobile phone
(3) a game application to move a video game character to an intended place as quickly as possible on the screen of a mobile phone. The more the degree of brain’s concentration, the more quickly the character moves.

Everyday, it seems the lines between Science Fiction and reality are constantly being blurred!

Android Welcomes App Store Rejects

Friday, September 26th, 2008

This is an interesting article about Developers migrating over to Android after being rejected by Apple’s strict standards. Apple has rejected many applications that it feels would be in competition with its flagship products.

Yahoo Web Site Redesign

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Yahoo, the most heavily trafficked site on the internet, is making changes to its homepage to

1. give users a more personalized view of the web and
2. Better monetize its high number of visitors

Not everyone will like these changes, as many users are content with the classical Yahoo. However, you will always find that often, this number won’t be high enough to discourage Yahoo and most will end up learning to adopt the new look. In addition, I wouldn’t be surprised if Yahoo lets users revert to the old look for the time being.

Peek This

Monday, September 15th, 2008

I am addicted to my email. I check it at least 100 times an hour. Hence when I heard about a device that was going to be dedicated to only emailing it “piqued” my interest. The Peek is a device that only allows you to send and receive emails!

Check it out and let us know what you think. We are very curious to see how the user interface operates and if there will be future plans for Third Party Developers to develop apps for this device, as it gains traction. Single purpose device rarely remain so and we believe it will be about a year before Peek offers either some sort of phone functionality or the ability to browse the internet.
